Greetings from Woven Golden at Home! Your online resource to learn the art of embroidery, find inspiration, and engage in creative community–all from the comfort of your home.
Can I just say that I am so glad you’re here? I really mean it. And I can’t wait to go on this journey with you. But I’m getting ahead of myself. First, let’s get acquainted!
Hi, I’m Sarah–the face and maker behind WG at Home. I am an entirely self-taught embroidery artist. My education is a combination of old books, YouTube tutorials, and a lot of trial and error. My love for embroidery all began 7 years ago one hot June morning. Home for the summer from college, waiting to start an internship, and bored senseless. There was nothing more for me to do than bide my time, which led to the only logical activity: snooping. I rifled through dresser drawers, hall closets, and basement shelves looking for something to do. Eventually, I stumbled across a cookie tin filled to the brim with embroidery thread, needles, and scraps of fabric—a relic of my grandmother. Without a thought (or, honestly, a plan), I set about crafting.
If we’re being real (and that’s what we’re always trying to be), my first few pieces were…not good. There was no technique, no strategy–I was simply making things up as I went. But the joy of creating without the expectation of perfection quickly became a favorite pastime. Siblings, friends, neighbors soon became the recipients of my amateur art. As I made more pieces, I decided that I needed a place to document my creations before giving them away. On January 8, 2017, Woven Golden was born on Instagram as a digital portfolio. Despite the excitement of documenting my work, there were two things I knew for certain, 1) I was still very new at this, and 2) I was not particularly good. If I was going to continue to put my hobby out into the world, I wanted to improve my skills. But I had no idea where to start.
Updating supplies, watching tutorials, reading books, following peers, and even attending a workshop were my building blocks. And I improved—significantly. The proof is in the progress of Woven Golden’s page. As my skills grew, so did my community. More people followed me, I started receiving commissions, and began selling my art. This was not the ultimate goal of Woven Golden, but collaborating with clients to bring a custom embroidery piece to life became something I looked forward to. Eventually, the commission work began to pile up too much on top of my daily life and work. I slowed down accepting requests and, for a time, did not accept any commissions. Some of the joy began to wear off and was replaced by the weight of obligation.
In 2023, I began a project that was just for me. I documented the process of creating this piece over 6 months, and the project was well-embraced. I had people following my progress, excited for updates, and along the way it reignited the flame in me that had been slowly burning out. It reminded me of why I started Woven Golden: for the joy of creating without expectation.
Woven Golden at Home is the idea born out of this purpose. WG at Home promises to provide an innovative approach on how to embroider in a friendly, welcoming, and engaging way. We’re here for the journey and the process, not the perfect result. We will learn and grow together, sharpening our skills as we go! Each week, I will be sharing content that is both instructive and inspirational, designed to get you crafting. Whether you’re a life-long crafter, a beginner, or just looking for inspiration, let this be your one-stop shop. Learn, ask questions, offer input, encourage one another—we’re in it together.
Take this as my formal invitation for you to grab your supplies, make yourself comfortable, and allow me to introduce you to your new favorite hobby.

This is amazing! I have been looking for a low key, creative outlet and haven’t ever considered embroidery. What would you recommend for someone who is unsure if they want to jump in?
sarahccullen · February 19, 2024 at 2:37 pm
Hi, Spencer! I am so glad to hear that you’re looking for a new creative outlet. If you’re unsure if you want to jump in, my encouragement to you would be that embroidery is for everyone and is approachable! Once you learn the basic mechanics, there are endless possibilities to what you can create. Stick around, as I will be sharing breakdowns of the basics for you to reference as you go. If you’re ever struggling, you can always submit an Instruction Support form and I will help. 🙂

The embroidered “pot of tea” scene was familiar to me. My Mamaw had a decorative trivet with the same image, but different wording.
sarahccullen · February 20, 2024 at 7:56 pm
Hi, Rebekah! That’s amazing. I recently found my grandmother’s pair to the sampler I completed with different wording so, maybe your Mamaw and I have the same one!

After witnessing so many ask you how you got started with embroidery and for advice on how they can start themselves, I am excited to follow along! Will you just be doing instruction support on embroidered hoops, or will there be options for clothing as well?
sarahccullen · February 21, 2024 at 12:40 pm
Hi, Natalie! Great question. I will be providing basic instruction for embroidered hoops primarily, but I will venture into some alternative application options (e.g., clothes, mixed media) as well.
